Mackays Hotel in Wick has been placed on the market, as the Lamont family look to sell after seven decades of continuous ownership. Built in 1883, the property has long been a landmark in the town.
The family-run business has been in the same hands since 1955, when it was acquired by the grandmother of current owner Murray Lamont. Murray and his wife Ellie have managed the hotel since the early 1980s and recently celebrated the property’s 70th anniversary under the family’s stewardship.
Known for its traditional hospitality, Mackays features a bistro, whisky bar, breakfast room and a range of function spaces, with capacity for up to 160 guests. Accommodation includes 30 en suite bedrooms, ranging from family rooms to superior doubles.
In addition to the main hotel, the sale includes several other assets available by separate negotiation. These include a block of six self-contained apartments, two townhouses and a vacant church building – all located within close proximity to the hotel.
Christie & Co is marketing the 30-bedroom riverside hotel with a freehold asking price of £1.2 million.
Gary Witham, Director – Hotels at Christie & Co, who is managing the sale, said, “It is unusual to be able to offer a sizeable, award-winning hotel so well located along the NC500. Mackays offers the chance to develop the business further through the hotel itself, but also through developing the adjacent apartments and townhouses, which provide a more self-contained option.”
