Hospitality Apprenticeship Scotland welcomes new intake

Sixteen new Modern Apprentices have officially begun their journey into the hospitality sector through the Hospitality Apprenticeship Scotland programme. The intake was welcomed at an induction day held at City of Glasgow College.

The programme brings together Professional Cookery and Hospitality Services apprenticeships and is supported by a number of hospitality employers across the country. This year’s participating businesses include Crieff Hydro, Apex Edinburgh, Meldrum House, The Torridon, Douneside House, Dalmahoy Hotel, Trump Turnberry, Banchory Lodge, The Chester Hotel and Leonardo’s Aberdeen.

The day-long session was hosted by City of Glasgow College and introduced by Gordon McIntyre, Chair of Hospitality Apprenticeship Scotland and featured input from industry representatives including Billy McNeil of Luxury Textiles, who led the day’s activities.

Scotland’s National Chef Gary Maclean also delivered a keynote speech during the event where he shared his experience of entering the industry and outlined his career progression to his current role as Associate Director for International Relations at City of Glasgow College.

The apprentices also heard from two former programme participants. Jack McNeil, now Guest Services Manager at Estelle Manor, and Hannah Kerridge, Duty Manager at Leonardo Hotels in Aberdeen, both spoke about the opportunities that came from completing the apprenticeship.

Hannah Kerridge said, “I started at one of the toughest points for our industry, but the apprenticeship gave me structure, purpose and the belief that I could build a career in hospitality. Now I’m in management and still learning every day.”

The apprenticeships are supported by Skills Development Scotland and delivered in partnership with City of Glasgow College. Apprentices receive support from SVQ assessors and will take part in a structured programme of learning and development including workplace training, masterclasses and visits to local producers and industry partners.

Gordon McIntyre, Chair of Hospitality Apprenticeship Scotland, said, “This induction day wasn’t just about welcoming the new intake. It was about reminding every apprentice, and every employer in the room, that hospitality is one of Scotland’s most dynamic and people-focused industries. We are building a pipeline of future managers, chefs, and leaders who will carry forward Scotland’s global reputation for excellence.”
