CODE refreshes The Loft with ‘UK first’ full-height capsule beds

CODE The Loft on Rose Street has reopened following a refurbishment, introducing what the operator says are the UK’s first full-height Japanese capsule beds.

The new units sit within a penthouse four-bed female-only dorm, with access to a private roof terrace overlooking central Edinburgh.

CODE launched The Loft in 2014 and describes it as Edinburgh’s first capsule bed accommodation. The latest redesign follows a 2025 research trip to Japan by founder and managing director Andrew Landsburgh and the team, who stayed in a range of Tokyo capsule hotels.

Andrew Landsburgh said, “Visiting Tokyo’s capsule hotels was genuinely transformative. We loved the feeling of the full height capsules, it was like having your own small room, private and peaceful, without sacrificing quality or comfort. That trip made it clear that we could bring something truly special back to Edinburgh. These new capsules blend Japanese inspiration with everything we’ve learned from running capsule accommodation for more than a decade.”

Each capsule includes an adjustable extract fan, multiple charging points including a UK three-pin socket, USB and USB-C, and a secure digital locker. Underbed storage with built-in lighting has also been added.

CODE said sleep comfort and noise reduction were priorities, with the capsules fitted with a custom mattress made from natural breathable materials and hypoallergenic duck feather duvets.

Jamie Greig, head of projects and design at CODE, said, “Every detail came from real experience, staying in capsules of every shape and size over the years and asking ourselves what we always wished they had. From the acoustic insulation to the storage lighting, to the custom mattress and the extra hooks, it’s all about making travel feel easier, calmer and more personal.”

The wider refurbishment includes refreshed capsule dorms, fully modernised bathrooms and new external signage reflecting CODE’s updated branding. Interior designer Pamela Mackay supported the updated look of the new dorm space.
