Fairmont St Andrews backs Scottish Hospitality Recruitment Drive

Fairmont St Andrews is backing a new campaign to attract young people to the industry as it slowly emerges from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The initiative, funded by the Scottish Government and led by Scottish Tourism Alliance (STA), is supporting businesses fill staff shortages that have occurred as a result of Brexit and encourage those aged 18-30 to play their part in helping businesses recover from the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic by applying their skills to the diverse job opportunities available now.

The three-year hospitality apprenticeship is designed to develop a young workforce which is accomplished in all aspects of the hotel business and as well as the STA, is also supported by Skills Development Scotland, Springboard, HIT Scotland, VisitScotland, UKHospitality Scotland, Scottish Enterprise, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and South of Scotland Enterprise.

The hotel has a predominately young workforce with 60% of its 374 members of staff aged under 30.

Catherine Reid, Sam Battershill and Shannon Richards have been appointed as the campaign ambassadors for Fairmont St Andrews. Catherine joined the team at the luxury hotel as a Graduate Apprentice three years ago, while Shannon, originally from Australia, has worked her way up from receptionist to Assistant Housekeeping Manager. Sam joined the beverage team as a bartender in 2019 and is now Bars Manager for the entire resort.

Catherine said, “I would encourage anyone interested in the hospitality and tourism industry to come and work here.

“I have been given so many opportunities and experiences, from working alongside Michelin Star chefs, award-winning hospitality leaders and colleagues whose careers have taken them all over the world. No two days are ever the same.

“I know I’m learning skills here in St Andrews that I will use throughout my career in hospitality. The team is so passionate about what they do and work hard every day to ensure we exceed guest expectations.

“In my time at Fairmont, I have also been involved in supporting other apprentices as they begin their careers at the hotel. The Apprenticeship Programme offers a great opportunity to experience all the different departments within the hotel whilst developing a deeper understanding of the hotel’s overall operations. I am also undertaking a BSc Business Management at the University of Dundee, completing my studies whilst learning on the job.”
