Apex City Quay Hotel & Spa in Dundee is commemorating its 20th anniversary with a 12-month licensing agreement with Beano, one of Dundee’s most iconic brands. This partnership will provide hotel guests with a range of exclusive Beano-themed experiences throughout the year.
At the forefront of these experiences is the debut of a Beano-inspired bedroom, a family room filled with Beano art and decorations showcasing some of the comic’s most well-known characters, such as Dennis and his loyal dog, Gnasher.
Guests can reserve the Beano-inspired room when booking the limited-edition ‘Blamazing Break’ overnight package. Along with discounts and perks, guests will also receive a commemorative comic strip and a limited-edition duck named Splasher. A special Beano-inspired menu is also available for kids at the Quayside Bar & Grill, and adults can also order their own Beanotown burger.
In line with the duck theme, the hotel commissioned a giant duck statue of Splasher dressed in the iconic red and black stripes. Set to arrive in June, Splasher will greet guests in the hotel foyer and serve as a popular backdrop for Instagram photos.
As part of the broader anniversary celebrations, the hotel launched a ’20 Weeks of Charity’ campaign in December, raising over £20,000 for local Dundee charities such as Maggies, the Dundee Bairns, and The Grey Lodge Settlement in Hilltown.
Paul Mooney, Apex City Quay Hotel & Spa General Manager, said: “We’re delighted and proud to partner with Beano to mark our 20th anniversary. Beano and Apex are synonymous with the City of Dundee, so this is a partnership that we believe showcases the very best of what our city has to offer. It’s also about offering something truly unique that appeals to a universal audience.”
Mooney added, “It’s an absolute privilege to be General Manager at this exciting time during the 20th birthday milestone. I have seen the city transform into one of Scotland’s cultural hubs with the launch of iconic venues like the V&A and over £1 billion invested in the Dundee Waterfront during my time as GM. The City of Dundee and its wider community have given us so much over the years, helping us grow and thrive as a business. The city is known for its collegiate and collaborative atmosphere between businesses, and I like to think we have played our part in helping Dundee prosper. Our role as a hub for tourism, commerce, and events is an immense source of pride for me and the entire team. Cheers to the next 20 years!”
Apex City Quay first opened in Dundee on March 21st, 2003, becoming the third property in owner Norman Springfield’s Apex family. Since then, the hotel has welcomed over a million guests and hosted numerous major city events, including the annual Courier Business Awards.
Quayside Bar & Grill, the hotel’s contemporary restaurant, has been a fixture of Dundee’s cultural scene, serving 850,000 meals, 450,000 pints of lager, and 1.4 million coffees. The restaurant and bar were refurbished in 2020 and were recently voted one of the UK’s most Instagrammable spots.
In recent years, the hotel has expanded its wellness offerings in response to the growing popularity of spa-cations and Yu Spa, Apex Hotels’ dedicated spa and wellness brand, has provided over 76,000 treatments to guests and visitors.
