Buzzworks has acquired the Nether Abbey Hotel in North Berwick, marking its first step into the accommodation sector and strengthening its presence in East Lothian.
The well-known coastal hotel, operated by Stirling and Jela Stewart and their family for over 60 years, officially changes hands this month. It will now close temporarily to allow for a seven-figure refurbishment, with work expected to begin in the spring and the venue set to reopen in late 2026.
The redevelopment will see the property relaunched as part of Buzzworks’ House Collection, with plans for a new-look pub, restaurant and 12 redesigned guest bedrooms. Design will again be led by Jim Hamilton, a long-time creative collaborator with the group.
All existing team members at the Nether Abbey will be retained, with roles offered across the wider Buzzworks estate during the refurbishment. Once complete, the business expects to create up to 45 new roles across front of house, kitchen, management and housekeeping.
Kenny Blair, Managing Director at Buzzworks, said, “North Berwick is an outstanding location for our first move into accommodation. This hotel has been an important part of the community for decades, and we are committed to honouring that legacy while bringing a Buzzworks experience to both locals and visitors alike.”
He added, “Staying above one of Scotland’s most loved hospitality venues is something genuinely unique. This is just the beginning of our journey into accommodation, and it supports our long-term ambition to become Scotland’s most loved hospitality business.”
Jela Stewart said, “After more than 60 wonderful years in our family, we are incredibly proud of the legacy of The Nether Abbey Hotel and the role it has played in the North Berwick community.
“Buzzworks shares our family values of providing quality, service and community spirit, and we’re confident the hotel is in excellent hands as it begins its next chapter.”
Buzzworks already operates a number of well-known venues across East Lothian and beyond, including Herringbone in North Berwick, Lido in Musselburgh, and Thirty Knots and Scotts in South Queensferry. The company has also featured on the UK’s Best Companies to Work For list for ten consecutive years.
